Additional data point: after copying the entire Notes directory to another location, I was able to open the copied Personal folder just fine. The original one still crashes.

Oh, of course! I didn't realize nvUltra was sandboxed. I'm inferring from the fact that you didn't mention a workaround that there will be no workaround from the app, so I'm looking at alternatives...
