Escape key no longer clears the open note
CompletedPrior to the recent rewrite the escape key cleared and focused the search bar as well as closed the open note.
It no longer closes the note, and I would like it to again if possible. :)

I'm not sure I follow. Hitting escape still moves the focus back to the search bar to allow you to start typing whatever you wish.
What is the workflow you wish to use that you can't?

The escape key no longer closes the open note and gives you a blank slate.
Lots of people work remotely today and end up sharing their screen as part of their work. I don't want to accidentally show my coworkers my gastrointestinal symptoms, 1:1 notes from one of their peers, my notes from a phone call to my bank re: a loan, etc. (all real examples of notes I have in nvUltra) and so I am in the habit of closing the open note by hitting escape if it contains sensitive information.
I can no longer do so after the rewrite and would desperately like to be able to again. :)

Ah. The escape key was never a "close the current file" key. It was a "jump back to the search field" key, which it still does. Hitting escape while in the search field clears the search field, but but that doesn't hide the current file since all files are still visible with an empty search query.
What you could do is have a saved search that results in no matches (e.g. searching for `XYZXYZZYX` or some other non-sense word). You could then escape to the search field, and then "Cmd-1" (if using the first saved search) to result in an empty search which clears the text editor.
There was prior discussion of this here -- https://multimarkdown.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360033334834-Esc-for-backing-out-of-a-file-into-search-field

Hmm, this did change with the rewrite though (2-3 months ago or whenever it came out). So I’m just asking for it to work like it did then. :)
I don’t mind if it takes two escape presses to clear the open note, but I would like it to work like it did previously.

It never worked like that, unless there was a bug I am unaware of.

Let me correct that. One moment.

Prior to the rewrite escape definitely cleared the active note, that’s why I commented—I miss the previous behavior which I relied on every day up until the rewrite was released. :)

Prior to May 2020 (well before the Mark 2 beta was released for public use) nvUltra moved focus to the search bar and reset the search query (as a side effect of this behavior in the old version, the active file (if any) was deselected).
After May 2020 it just moved the focus to the search bar and did not clear the query. Escaping again would clear the query.
(I just verified this by rebuilding pre/post-change builds from May 2020, as well as the most recent change from April 2021.)
So the behavior has been unchanged since May 2020, aside from a short regression window where the escape key behavior was disabled altogether.

All I know is that prior to the "Mark II" release it did what I wanted it to. :)
If it's not going to do that again I'll have to find a hack or another way to take notes.

Beau, how about using Escape then the ` key right below it? This will probably blank both the file list AND the note window (unless you have many filenames with the back-tick key).
