    Great. Thanks!

The problem persists even after the latest build (Version 1.0.0 [2023.03.03.01.54]). (I, of course, noted the language in the changelog where it is framed not as “fixed” but as an “attempt” to fix.) That said, it feels as though the “jumps” are less frequent in this last build, but I’m not sure.

If it helps, although I said before that the jumps happen randomly in different notebooks, on a closer look, this problem seems to only act up in one of my notebooks (reserved for miscellaneous notes, including my nvUltra feedback), which includes the least amount of notes. That is, I haven’t really noticed any jumps in my other, primary notebooks!

What things seem to be different about the contents of the problematic notebook as compared to your other notebooks?  Different file types, numbers, etc.

Frankly, there is nothing radically different in the problematic notebook—if anything, the files are fewer and shorter; there is, however, one file that only contains a small template table, and another that contains an excerpt of an html code plus some text. Oh, I just remembered, this notebook is also the one I’ve designated as the destination folder in Brett’s nvUltra extension for PopClip, though I haven’t gotten to using that function very often (I might’ve used it only a couple of times), which is why I’d forgotten about it.

I don’t use this notebook very often; recently, I’ve only used it to draft my nvUltra feedback posts. Now, the last time I used it to draft the very post to which you’ve responded, I did experience some jumps. But this time around, as I’m writing this (and I’ve intentionally stayed on this notebook for about twenty minutes now), the jumping seems to have stopped!

I have rebooted my system a couple of times since I last experienced any jumps; I don’t know if that’s got anything to do with it. It’s a bit puzzling, but so far, so good.

PS After I finished writing this, I browsed through the files in the notebook and deleted some. When I returned to my feedback file, I experienced a jump: it took me to one of the files I’d just deleted—that is, even though I deleted it, it’s still hanging around in the File List as trashed.

    Hope this helps.

This happened to me today as I was taking notes in a meeting. nvU jumped to different files as I was taking notes. I would return to my meeting note, and as I typed it would jump to other random notes.

I’m not sure whether the “jump” issue has been resolved entirely for the upcoming build. As I mentioned earlier, I have been trying, with little success, to comprehend the peculiar situation where jumps only occur in one of my notebooks. This particular notebook happens to have been one of the earliest I created in nvUltra. Interestingly, like my other folders, when I initially created it, I likely did so via Finder, but I cannot be certain. A few of the files, as in my other notebooks, were transferred from nvAlt to nvUltra in .txt format, while the others were created within nvUltra itself. Moreover, at one point, I converted all the text files within this folder to .md format, which has been my default extension since I started working with nvUltra.

Over the past few days, I have tried renaming the folder, deleting it and creating a new one (with the same files), and even creating a new folder and gradually moving the files over to test if there was a specific file causing the jumps (I did all of this using Finder and Open… from within nvUltra). However, I found that the jumps occurred regardless of the number of files (i.e., two or more), file content or type, whether it was a brief email draft, a file with a large number of drafts, or another only containing a table..

What seems to have worked for me is creating a new notebook/folder via nvUltra’s File>New option, rather than using Finder. Since yesterday morning, I have two new files—created inside nvUltra—in this new notebook/folder, and I have not experienced any jumps. But I believe that I would have encountered several jumps during the same timeframe If I had used Finder to create or modify the folder/files.

I hope this helps in resolving the issue.

This has been happening to me nearly constantly. Seems especially worse when I first open the app or switch to a new note that I haven't edited since opening the app. Very fristrating, makes it almost impossible to use.

    Hi Matt:

I have a suggestion that may help with the jumping issue for now. It might have been a just a fluke, but when I unchecked the "Cache Indexes on disk" option in Preferences, the jumping seemed to stop. It's not a perfect solution, but it could serve as a temporary fix. I'm not entirely certain if it will work for you, as I'm still unsure if it has worked for me. However, it's worth giving it a try. The only downside is that you will need to wait a bit for the indexing process each time, and your pinned files will disappear each time you close a window, at least in my experience. Given the severity of the jumping issue you've been experiencing, it should become apparent fairly quickly if this resolves the problem for the time being.

If anyone can detail how to recreate this, it would be very helpful.  It happened to me a few months ago, and has not happened since.

The “Cache indexes on disk” issue should not directly be a fix.  What that does is determine whether or not to save the cache, but the cache is always in memory when the folder is being used.  What would be different is that the whole folder would be reindexed from scratch upon opening.  If the cache is saved, then the existing index is loaded, and then updated based on the current folder contents.  So it would indirectly change the way that indexing happens, but this *should* only change behavior when first opening a folder.  Once the index is updated, they *should* behave the same….

Closing this and moving the discussion here:

I think this is improved (fixed?) in 2025.02.04 release, so please check that version out.
