Old style/old-school thoughts

I may be out of sync with the intent of the refresh, but I'll still describe some things I'm preferring from the original nvALT that are keeping me from moving over except to test. Could you support a compact, simple view like the original?  Things I like include the very tight vertical spacing, both in the topic list and the text.  (I tried reducing the spacings I could find in preferences, but there's still a lot more line-spacing in the editor and spacing between topics in the list than I'd like.)  I also like having no vertical space around the toolbar   I also like in the topic list the boldface topic title followed by the non-boldface first few words.  I like the modified/added columns, both to read and to sort.  I'd like to be able to hide the “.md” in the search pane when I'm editing.

A comment that is not about the visual style is just that I find it less easy to switch back and forth between the search, topic selection and editing.  The original used up/down arrows (from search/select/create to selection in the list) and tab/shift-tab.

I find the behavior of the toolbar buttons puzzling and haven't found a description of them in the documentation.  If there are features in the toolbar I might not use often, I'd like to be able to remove them from the toolbar.  More radical, consider being able to turn off the toolbar, only toggling it on when I type cmd-L (or shift-tab a la nvALT)
