The document could not be opened. NvUltra Beta cannot open files in the "text" format.
CompletedI'm getting this error message when trying to open existing .txt files:
The document could not be opened. NvUltra Beta cannot open files in the "text" format.
Thanks,

What do you mean? nvUltra doesn't "Open" documents, it opens folders.
What exactly are you doing -- If you're seeing this message, you're doing something wrong. ;)

Fletcher Penney I just ran into this as well. With nvALT, you used to be able to open a TXT file and it would either open it (if it existed in your nvALT file list already) or create it as a new file in your nvALT file list. This was incredibly helpful.
The way the nvUltra is designed right now, it's difficult to open a file in nvUltra except from nvUltra. For example, if I come across a TXT file in the Finder, there's nothing I can do with it to open it in nvUltra. I have to go to nvUltra and navigate to the note there.

nvUltra can open multiple folders, so there is not a specific place to "put" a text file that you open that way.
If you want to move a random text file to an nvUltra folder, you can easily do so in the Finder -- it will be "immediately" indexed by nvUltra. Or simply drag the text file to your nvUltra window to copy it that way (the original will be left in place).

Fletcher Penney Ah, that makes sense.
What about opening files that are already in a folder indexed by NVU? I used to do that all the time with nvAlt. It was great to be able to open those files from Spotlight, Launchbar, Keyboard Maestro, etc.
NVU does not have to "put" those files anywhere if they're already in an NVU folder.

nvAlt only worked with one folder. nvUltra can work with any number of folders simultaneously (including those with an ancestor/descendent relationship. So a given file can actually be indexed inside a virtually unlimited number of indexed folders.
nvUltra has url handler support and applescript support if you want to tell it to open certain folder/file combinations from other utilities. But you have to tell it specifically what you want, since just handing it a path to a file without additional information (such as which folder you want to open prior to selecting the file) is insufficient.0 -
Fletcher Penney Thanks for the response. Hope I don't sound pushy. Just trying to make sure I'm understanding you and vice versa.
So if I have in the Finder a TXT file already indexed by NVU and try to "Open with" NVU, there's no way for NVU to say, "This is already in my database, so I'll just load the copy I already have?"

Which database? Any given file usually belongs to three or more levels of parent folders, any one of which could be opened in nvUltra, which, by the way, does not require folders to be indexed on disk in order to use them.
