hard to test when it regularly won't open
CompletedI'm trying to test this but don't use it every day. It's great that there is so much rapid progress in development. But it means that often when I try to open and use nvUltra, it simply does not work. When a new version comes out without notice, it makes the previous version inoperable it seems. No message or link to update. Just nothing.
I downloaded the latest version less than 3 weeks ago and now it is inoperable. I have to find the email with the link to the beta site and download again. If I am in a meeting, this means that I've missed a chance to take notes. Can there be another way of dealing with updates?

Recent versions check for announcements on the web site to show an alert when new versions are released. Sparkle checks for new releases every time the app launches as well. (It is supposed to check every day even if it is left running, but it seems that does not always work properly for some reason.) Newly added is a warning to the user when the app is launched with less than 7 days before the expiration date.
A key reason for expiring is that on the rare occasion there is a serious bug, we don't want that version sitting around indefinitely to be used and cause problems for others. It's been a long time since we found one of those sorts of bugs, but we don't like taking chances with other people's data.
A less important, but still important, reason is that we get a fair number of bug reports that have already been fixed in more recent builds, even with a fairly tight expiration schedule. Forcing users to update helps allow us to focus on new problems rather than troubleshooting things that are already fixed.
However, we are particularly looking for users who actually *use* the app during beta testing.... ;) Obviously the final version will not expire. But for now, we do want to ensure that beta testers are staying current and testing the latest version.

Thanks for the nicely detailed explanation. I appreciate the things you're doing to make testing better.
I don't leave nvUltra running in the background because I thought it might not update the notes index. I'm using it on multiple computers with notes stored in my DropBox folder. Works well most of the time.
Maybe I should leave it running though.

Actually, from a beta perspective it's easier when you don't leave it running, but launch it frequently. If you leave it running, you should restart it every few days to a week. Several of the checks are forced to happen when the app launches, so that is the most reliable way to ensure an up to date copy.
Once we're out of beta, you should be able to leave it running all the time.
