This gets backs to the ongoing weirdness I've seen with regard to spaces at the end of the current line (see my other reports about string highlighting and italicization). This is in a similar vein. There's nothing really *wrong* with the current behavior, per se, but it's quite distracting when you're typing and the document formatting keeps changing on you and text keeps bouncing around (this is also true with my italicization and string highlighting reports):
Note the space at the end of the line:
Now I type one more character (an "a") and a space opens up between that line and the next line. If I were to type another space, this blank line would close up again, causing the formatted text to bounce up and down as I type whitespace/non-whitespace characters:
Now when I press Return at the end of the line, the blank line is auto-numbered with a 3 but no additional blank line opens up:
Lastly, when I type a character (an "R") the blank line opens up again:
My biggest concern is the distraction caused by the bouncing of the text below the line as I edit.

I can't replicate this. The best idea I have is that you have unintended tab characters in your file. Show invisibles will help you track them down. nvUltra's syntax highlighting does not change vertical spacing (unless you did something really strange with a custom theme, but then you would have to share the theme to troubleshoot that.)
