    That list comes from macOS, and consists of all applications that are registered as being able to edit the specific file you have selected.  It is based off of file extension, which in turn controls the UTI assigned to a file.  The item at the top is controlled by the default app for a given file, which you can override globally or on a per file basis in the Finder.

     

    Since Markdown files are plain text, they can be edited by a *ton* of applications.

    I figured.

    I like the drop down menu though. It is better than the choice of the default program for Markdown. You get to choose whatever you want. 

    For someone like me, who has way too many Markdown based text editors installed, it is a good feature. :)

    The other advantage is that this works for any file type, since nvUltra supports more than just text.  If you have an image, for example, you can open it in an image editor.
