[bug] Up/Down arrows still leave search field focused
CompletedWhen hitting ⌘+⌫, the search is cleared out but the selected note is not deleted. Only by mouse-clicking to select a note can I use the Trash shortcut.
(Original Post Title: “Move to Trash” shortcut clears search, does not delete file.)

When you say not deleted, do you mean that the file still appears in the list, still exists on disk, or both?

Both. I’ve included a link to a screencast, which I hope is helpful. You’ll see me keying down the list to a couple files and attempting to delete each. You’ll note they neither disappear from the list nor from the finder window at right, but the search field clears in the first two examples (curiously, not the third).

Ah, your search field is still focused, so cmd-delete is simply deleting your search. You have to click a file in the list to focus it with the mouse, so the bug report here would actually be that the up/down arrows still leave the search field focused, which I do consider to be something worth looking into.

Got it. Updated post title. Thank you!

Just FYI, we're discussing this internally and defining the guiding philosophy behind what "modes" are indicated by these actions and what makes the most consistent sense for the interactions. We welcome further discussion here, but our own debate will be "behind the curtain" for now.

I did modify the behavior so that *if* you are in notes list, up/down arrow keys do not shift focus to search/create field. *If* you are in search/create field, up/down keys leave the focus where it is.

Thank you very much! Is there a way to shift focus to the notes list via the keyboard? ⌘-L goes to search field. Getting to the note itself is easy enough. But I still seem to need to mouse into the notes list.

Why are you trying to shift focus to to the notes list? What are you trying to accomplish?

Ultimately, I would still like to delete a selected note entirely from the keyboard. I generate a lot of notes with temporary, one-time value and delete liberally.
Per the recent fix, I can now hit the up/down arrows to navigate the notes list without losing focus. We established earlier I need focus to delete the note and not just clear the search. And all this is helpful.
But how does the notes list get focus to begin with, short of mousing over to it?

Thank you for the updates to this in v40. It works great.

Was there a regression of sorts with this one? I see the modified behaviour being described above, where selection within the notes list automatically shifts focus out of the search field, however deleting a file still resets the search. This seems to be true even if I manually click into the note list with the mouse (though there doesn't appear to be any difference in focus when doing so, and so I'm not sure if that is even necessary).

Not a regression -- same behavior as always.
But I changed for next release to leave the current search unchanged when deleting files, other than to remove any files that were deleted.
