After some more checking seems to work fine if I have auto-zooming on. My bad re: initial report.

... although I would prefer if this worked fine even when auto-zooming not on. Possible? I guess I don't know the expected behavior and conditions here.

It's actually the other way around.  nvUltra is more accurate than Composer and better accounts for a couple of small nuances with the left and right margins and the way they work with macOS. (With the exception of a bug described below.  To properly test with current beta (23) set default zoom to 100% and turn auto zoom off.)

    1. To accurately test, you need to use a monospace font.  Variable width fonts don't have a fixed character width (hence the "variable") and rely on estimate of the average character width.

    2. Auto zoom ensures the proper width regardless of the window size (though there was a bug in the math that is fixed for the next release that caused errors when the window got too small.  This could also cause errors with a default zoom that was not 100%)

    3. With or without auto zoom, if you make the window bigger than it needs to be, the line length should be correct.  If the window is too small, and auto zoom is turned off, then the length will, of course, be too short.

As to your sample text, when I set length to 66 and use your sample sentence, it breaks after "see" for all the pre-set font choices, with the exception of OpenDyslexic, with auto zoom on and off, as well as a sufficiently large window (e.g. full screen)

In my tests, I use a fixed width font (e.g. Courier or Menlo) to ensure accuracy, and I get exactly the proper number of characters (or perhaps a single character less (and more rarely a single character more) -- due to calculations that result in a fraction of a pixel that gets rounded and happens to alter the line breaking, usually while manually resizing the window).

If you have changed a bunch of settings, try toggling auto zoom on and then off to ensure that everything gets recalculated and reset.

If you're still having trouble, send a screenshot of your editor window and the Appearance preferences and I can dig further.

    Thanks!!

Okay, I think I got it now. Many thanks.

I had things set up so the default zoom was set to 150% so that may have caused some of the weirdness for me. I've followed your advice and all seems to be working as expected now.

Should be able to return to 150% with next release.

    Thanks!!
