The search box always creates a new file when you hit enter, unless the contents of the search match an existing file.

So when typing `#tips`, if you hit enter, nvUltra will correctly create the new file you asked it to create (unless you already have a file named `#tips.md`).

As you type, the notes list automatically updates to show all matching files.  The up/down arrows will automatically take you to the notes list to allow you to select a file without using the mouse/trackpad.

    This behavior has not changed.

I was referring to this in the usage guide

    --------

    https://nvultra.com/help/search-syntax

    Tag Searches

If you make use of tags in your notes (or via Finder, since those can be synced), you can narrow your search down to tagged notes. The syntax can either be tag:X or TAG:X or #X(where X is the name of your tag).

When you type # or tag: in the search/create bar, nvUltra will begin autocompleting available tags for you. Note that partial tag matches do not work, the complete tag name must be entered.

    -----

I thought we could search with tags. And I do remember searching in this way, even now some tags it searches but is erratic on others.

The behaviour one expects is you type the initial letters of the tag, a matching list is displayed, you double click on the correct match and it displays note list with that tag.

Am I not getting something quite right?

I got it. One must not hit enter after typing the tag but leave a space and continue to add more text to find the note one is looking for.

This is not quite clearly worded in the usage guide.

    Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure I follow you, so to clarify:

Typing `#foo` or `tag:foo` without hitting enter or typing anything else is enough to find all messages that are tagged with `foo`.  You can, of course, type more if you wish to narrow the search down further.

If that is not working for you, then perhaps your index was corrupted?  You could use the `Clear cache` button in the General Preferences (but you should generally not need to do this.)

(When you CAN use the enter/return key is when nvUltra auto-suggests some tags in the search box – you can arrow down to the one you want and hit enter to autocomplete.  e.g. `#f` becomes `#foo`.  In this case the enter key is technically in the popup menu, not the search box itself.)

Helps to know with more clarity.

Now I think that searching with tags feature is just fine. The Usage guide needs some attention though, to make things clear and unambiguous for users. It is ‘normal’ to hit enter to search, from years of using search engines. Second, one needs to make sure that the note list  (usually the left pane)  is visible, as that is where the search is being actively shown in realtime and is at the heart of nvUltra. Without that pane, one will not use search as effectively. Appreciate the usefulness of the app a lot more now.

    Thanks.
