Accepting images doesn't cause them to display

I have a directory with some png files and MMDCompser does show the dialog to open files to adjust their attributes like shown below:

However, the files are not selectable, and clicking open doesn't seem to have any effect on displaying these images. Closing and reopening MMDComposer5 shows the dialog again so it must not be accepting my input.

 

Do I need to go up a level so the image directory is selected?

  Is there some file I can delete to try to have the files reprocessed by the MMDComposer5?

  I downloaded the latest file from 11/02/2023 and installed then shows the listing of the files (all with 777 modifiers) and start MMDComposer5. Note: it doesn't display anything until I add a space somewhere in the .md file content. Then you see the image not displayed. Then I copy the path to the image and show that it can be reached from the directory where the README.md file was loaded.
