    nvUltra opens folders, not documents.

    Hello Philip, hello all new (or potential) users of macOS 11.3,

    I encountered myself the same problem as Philip; it has nothing to do with nvUltra or MMD Composer; really many applications not produced directly by Apple,

    1. could open without any problem; but
    2. were not allowed to open themselves any file, even if the files were in a format used only by that specific application;

    Solution:

    1. reset NVRAM or PRAM; (after which, you might have to set again the startup disk in System Preferences);
    2. reset the SMC;
    3. restart in safe mode; check, if all problematic applications function fine now; if so,
    4. restart in the plainest sort of way; if some problems return, then one of your extension is the culprit;

    In my personal case, a very reliable extension which I use for my MacBookPro safety, might have blocked a new stealth intrusion from Apple, (even more aggressive than in macOS 11.2.3).

    Adrian Fronda -- thanks for the suggestions.  Yes, there can be issues where macOS "locks out" a certain application from launching or opening a file it should be able to open.  Sometimes users report even seeing a similar message when they open an application itself.  (Though I have not seen that.)

    However -- this is different.  nvUltra will not open text files, because that is not what it does.  It opens folders, which can contain many types of files, including text files.  But as far as macOS is concerned, the "document type" that nvUltra opens is a folder.

    This is different than MultiMarkdown Composer, which does open individual files.

    A response from Philip Davis went elsewhere (presumably a different sending email address), but it as just a brief slip and forgetting that nvUltra worked differently than the other editors he described.

    All is well.
